Description

The City of Oakland worked with Placeworks, a landscape design firm, and community members to address the needs of the local community. Safe parks, clean water, and complete streets were provided through Snow Park and the surrounding area. A playground for children surrounded by an open grass field can be enjoyed by all. A sunken rain garden captures and treats stormwater runoff, which will improve water quality and the environment. The 16' long bronze sculpture in the rain garden was inspired by an Ohlone folktale sea creature, which celebrates the return of native fauna to the lake.

Since we self-perform multiple trades, our crews covered grading, paving, landscape, irrigation, and site furnishings for the new park. Rush hour traffic in the heart of downtown was a daily challenge our team faced. We were also mindful of the active community filled with walkers, joggers and bicyclists who enjoy walking around the lake everyday. Now that it's complete, visitors and locals have a new area of the lake to explore. We were honored to be part of the improvement of Lake Merritt and the positive impact it has on the well-being of the community.
