We develop lasting relationships built on trust, fairness and respect. We were founded on the principle that “our word is our bond”, and we continue to honor that today.

Our people are our greatest asset. We foster a team atmosphere built upon mentorship, empowerment, diversity, and recognition. Together we make a difference.

We understand that the quality of our work is our legacy for generations to come. We are committed to performing our work with the highest degree of excellence.

Safety is our culture. We prioritize the safety of our team, as well as those around us, to ensure everyone goes home safely.

Creating opportunities for our employees is our commitment. Innovative thinking and entrepreneurial spirit make these opportunities possible.

We are committed to supporting and improving the communities where we live and work. Our ability to positively impact the lives of others is at the heart of our core values.

Financial stability is a cornerstone of our company. We seek long-term success, not short-term windfalls.

Our History

Our storied timeline spans nearly a century and has played an integral role in the construction of many of Northern California’s most recognized landmarks and infrastructure projects. Established in 1926, McGuire and Hester began with the vision of two Irish immigrants, Mike McGuire and Mike Hester, who used their knowledge and hard work to achieve the American dream.

Through the decades, McGuire and Hester has developed into a full-service civil contractor. Today the company is 100% employee-owned and considered one of the top workplaces in the area. McGuire and Hester has a bright future that builds upon a strong legacy.

We Love Our Community

McGuire and Hester has a long tradition of giving back to the communities where we live and work. Our late founder, Michael Hester Sr., was a lifelong philanthropist who was instrumental in establishing the St. Vincent de Paul Society soup kitchen in Oakland. In 1955, he and his wife established the Michael and Maureen Hester Foundation. Today, their grandson Mike Hester carries on the family tradition as a trustee for the now-named McGuire and Hester Foundation.

Whether it has been through McGuire and Hester’s in-kind donations or the Foundation’s monetary contributions to various charitable projects, we have always considered it an honor to give back. It is our humble way of saying “thanks” to the communities we have had the privilege to work in.
