Desription
Several rounds of feasibility, budget updates and design development meetings accelerated project delivery and eliminated surprises. McGuire and Hester demolished the existing courtyard, including substantial removal of concrete paving and planters
Existing trees were then transplanted to UC Berkeley’s Richmond Field Station. Demolition took place during Christmas Break, working 6 days a week 10 hours per day, work continued through April of 2013 in order to have a minimal impact on students. New utilities were installed among a dense network of existing services.
To ensure the proper growth of the 12 new Maple trees yet provide the required support for the cast and stone paver surface, 600 Silva Cells were installed below grade and filled with planting soil. The Silva Cell system is modular pavement support system which enables use of large soil volumes to support tree growth, as well as provide powerful on-site storm water management through absorption, evapotranspiration, and interception.
