Reclaiming Community Spaces
The project began with the demolition of five deteriorated alleyways, followed by the installation of a new underground storm drain system. A pervious paver drainage solution was introduced to reduce surface runoff and promote on-site infiltration. Together, these improvements help manage stormwater more efficiently while improving the safety and longevity of the alleyways.
Since the alleys serve as active access points for residents, maintaining use during construction was a critical priority. McGuire and Hester carefully phased the work to ensure minimal disruption while also addressing unexpected conditions, including the discovery of undocumented utilities. The team’s ability to adapt quickly and resolve issues in the field helped keep the project moving forward without delay.
This revitalization effort significantly improved both the function and appearance of the alleys. What were once deteriorated and inefficient spaces now offer cleaner, safer, and more accessible pathways for residents. The upgrades contribute to neighborhood pride while also improving overall stormwater performance.
McGuire and Hester brought in-house capabilities in demolition, grading, pipeline installation, and concrete work to deliver a seamless and coordinated effort. The team’s proactive communication, field experience, and ability to stay ahead of schedule added measurable value to this community-focused improvement project.
