McGuire and Hester faced some unique challenges while constructing and successfully completing this project. The existing 24-inch combined sewer system had to remain active throughout the entire project. To make this happen, several bypass systems were simultaneously running. Half of this project was done with a 74-inch tunnel boring machine. McGuire and Hester dug two jacking pits and the average invert of the tunnel boring pipe was 20 ft below the surface. A few of the challenges faced with this type of boring included the potential for groundwater, existing underground fiber utilities, and a live sewer system just feet above the tunnel boring machine.
The second half of this project was installing the 60- inch RCP with open cut bell and spigot pipe. The dense consortium of new old and unknown utilities was difficult in a downtown setting. It took the experience and creativity of our field personnel to adapt with multiple shoring techniques and consulting with the engineer for redesign options to allow the system to function properly.
Upon completion of the installation of the underground utilities the City then asked McGuire and Hester to repave the entire street with a slurry seal and new striping format to match current city standards.
