FedEx 2009 Ramp Expansion

When FedEx decided to expand their Oakland Hub operations, they engaged McGuire and Hester to construct six new concrete gates with ramps and a taxiway to accommodate their largest delivery planes. All work had to be completed while maintaining full operational access for FedEx, and allowances had to be made for onsite native soils and bay mud combined with sand and a high fluctuating water table. A portion of the project entailed building on a surcharged fill site with wick-drains adjacent to sensitive wetlands. The job began with demolition of existing asphalt paving followed by grading and construction of a concrete retaining wall adjacent to the wetlands. Our team then installed 2,200 linear feet of storm drain piping with 13 aircraft-rated concrete drain structures. The project continued to include ramp electrical distribution and lighting, 2,300 linear feet of jet fuel mainline and eight fueling pits. Finally, we proceeded to flexural and concrete paving, and the installation of four, large Sprung warehouse structures for all-weather package sorting.
